SCARRING
Scarring
and disfigurement is the most common long-term effect of
acne. While relatively rare, especially with modern treatments,
it still is a source of concern and esteem-issues in many
folks. While medications, such as accutane,
can have serious side effects, weighing the risks of treatment
against the prospect of permanent scarring often results
in a trial of medicine. The key is seeing a doctor and getting
treated before scarring gets out of hand.
For
those in whom scarring has occurred, dermatologists
usually recommend chemical peeling, collagen injections,
or dermabrasions. All of the above are performed by professionals
and cannot be performed at home. Again, the use of abrasive
soaps as sold over-the-counter is usually not useful and
can cause increased irritation of the skin.
