In reply to:
So now you are telling me that you can compare slaves w/ computers? Slaves are people, computers are machines. You can't compare the two.
OMG!!!! You are so grasping for straws now. Is there anything that can be said right in your hypocritical little head???

You are completely correct that the slaves were treated much the same as we treat stuff created to serve us.
No1, you can't deny that owners thought this way. Jefferson said slaves are property, property can be treated anyway the owner wants it to be. Is it right no. But cenfath is right. You seem to have a huge problem with calling the KKK hypocrites, yet you use terms which have come to have a derogetorry meaning. In essence you are no better than them.
We are all guilty of feeling superior to others, its part of being a group. The Africans had slaves as well, thats where the Europeans got the idea, yeah they were treated more humanely, but again, what's wrong for one race is just as wrong for another.

When it comes to the Civil War, almost everything, if not everything, can be linked back to slavery. Profits: slavery. States Rights: slavery. Tradition: slavery.
So is slavery really an underlying cause of the civil war?
At first I would say money was the cause of the civil war. After all, money is what makes the world go 'round. But then again, money can be linked to slavery too.
I thought the computer/slave analogy was kinda funny. You can't really relate the physical use of an animate person with an inanimate object. But you got the thinking process of SOME past slave owners correct.
The real question it seems you were trying to address in the end of your argument was:
What does the confederate flag represent?
The Civil War had everything to do with slavery, but did the flag represent the Civil War? NO.
So, before answering the question, what do you think about the confederate flag, you must first answer this question:
What does the confederate flag represent?

Many people hold that the symbol of a country represents its core values. My arguement is, doesn't a symbol mean different things to different people.
Lets face it, very few people in America have a concensus political view that's why there are 100s of political parties differing in very few areas from one another.
I think a more appropriate question is, what does the Confederate flag mean to the individual?
Thus presenting the issue that you cannot limit people's beliefs (per 1984, Brave New World). If a racist wants the flag to represent hate, it will. If a HS student wants it to be a school symbol, it will.
It all goes back to "If you don't like it, don't look."

I agree. I meant for my question to be asked to each individual. But in order to become united, we must all reach a close ideology on the matter, so I asked the group. Oh Lookie! I'm the next Abe Lincoln.
A little political humor some of you might not find funny, but I did!

In America...you're more likely to get a skinhead, Jew, and black man in a room to share a group hug than to get everyone remotely close to one ideology.

I know, that's why it was funny.
That's why good ol' Abe is the 2nd most important president of the US. He's right under good ol' George. (Washington that is)

I was never pissed at the issue. It was the way you approached it.
You preach on how we are so wrong because we can't prevent people from exercising free speech, yet call the people who believe that its heritage redneck. I remember a post when you got upset at someone for saying Jap, yet you haul off and call some people redneck. You are no better than those you condemn for that fact.

No, my dear boy it was not. The civil war was not as much about slavery and racism as it was trading with Britain. The North basically had better trading agreements with Britain than the South (the North would produce goods that would be taken to Britain that would then sell them to the South for a higher price) and there were a few other land issues involved also. Mainly, the Civil War was not about slavery and racism. It did accomplish the abolishment of slavery, but that was only a small portion of the war.

Nonsense. If you're talking about the issue of trade protectionism (North pro, South against), this issue played second fiddle to slavery. If you spend a moment looking at contentious cases (Dred Scott v. Sanford, for instance), and political debate during that period (Lincoln v. Douglas), you'd have to be a fool not to conclude that slavery was the driving force behind north-south animus prior to the civil war. It's no coincidence that the vast majority of reconstruction legislation was aimed at slavery and racism. I beg you to point towards legislation regarding trade that rivals the 13th, 14th, 15th amendments, the Voting Acts, the Civil Rights Acts, etc. These were the contentious issues prior to the Civil War, and you better believe that they were the contentious issues during reconstruction.
Sorry, “my boy,” you’ll need more than simple conclusions to convince me. Show me legislation, debates, cases, etc.
I’ve got three Constitutional Amendments, the most controversial Supreme Court case in American history, and the most famous debates in American history. Show your cards.

Well, your hypocritical views are showing on the Teen Life and Health Board.
You got pissed when zacharymansell called you a ni----, yet your on here calling peeps redneck.
What's the fucking difference. It's ok for you to call names, but not anyone else??? I'm sure several people here feel the same, but just aren't showing it.

The "nigger"/"redneck"/racial slur debate must end. Yes, "redneck" is not an ideal term, but Sexpot is CLEARLY not a racist. For the love of God, she's been dating a white guy for like a year (2 years, 6 months- I have no idea).
No more "redneck" and no more "nigger" comments, and let's drop this endless battle and return to sanity.

Ehhh....nah..I think I'll just stand back here and fly a Confederate flag until someone tells me it's against the law. In the mean time I have better things to worry about than whether or not No1, or anyone else for that matter, thinks I'm a racist bitch, main reason being...I have a dying grandfather on my hands whom I have no one to speak with about it and I grow tired of everyone's bullshit about "slavery this and Confederate flag that, and you're all f*cking racists", while I sit back and watch the person I'm closest to, the person I would normally tell everything to and can't, waste away. The second one...I just dont give a shit anymore. Everyone on here can think I'm a Confederate flag flying, racist, redneck bitch of a Southerner for all I care because most probably do (which would explain why No1Sexpot removed me from her buddy list) and that doesn't bother me because I already know who I am. And No1 can go on calling me a redneck if she wants to, but since she can call me a redneck, that means I can say the word ni**er (a word I can't stand by the way and don't like saying). That seems only fair since she can use racial slurs to describe others.
And as far as the Confederate flag. No one has a patent on it. It's fair game. Anyone can use it for whatever they want. No one is LETTING hate groups use it. Most probably don't like it. I know I don't like it. But no one says anything because the law protects minorities like hispanics and African-Americans. And like it or not groups like the KKK are a minority because there aren't very many of them and the law was designed to protect minority rights as well as majority. So, sorry, but you're not getting your way.

the aye's were in favour of stopping this topic from continuing to be a somewhat personal argument between no1 and worried, not from stopping you flying your flag. *shrugs* i couldnt care less about what you do with a flag, though the mere fact that quite a few people find it offensive should maybe at least make you reconsider your reasons for flying it, even if you choose to continue to do so

There are different reasons diff. people fly it. Mine was a school symbol, another's may be a CW reenactment, anothers may be hate, but just because a few choose to use it inappropriately does not mean it should be atken away from those who use it in a different spirit.
Like I said, it was a symbol of my HS and even the black kids flew it at games. If it's not used as a hate symbol, why is it so wrong???

I have only one question, Why now? was it not the same flag as it was in 1970, 80s, 90s. So why now in 2000s?
It's really not about the flag but then it is. White boy may know more about this than me... but a friend from where I use to live was telling me how now all of a sudden they want to change the name of the Mississippi airport. (I don't want them too.) Sigh WHY??? I'm just trying to understand it. lol i'm more confused than ever but this keeps popping up in my mind, Why now? Old miss (a college in Mississippi) just changed there mascot, and As far as I know still use the confederate flag... School of the rebels (personally I’m a state, bulldog, fan. Go MSU loll my plug in lol)
So this is how I see things. For so many years nothing was said, all of a sudden in 2000 every thing must go , or get a new name or whatever.
Let's say one day the confederate flag is done away with...what's next? will they go to Vicksburg and close down the park? will they want to stop flying the American flag because it is being flew by hate groups?
now moving on from neg to positive, Because of sexpot's post I have asked questions to both sides, and said my in put threw PMs, and I have learned some things. Actually a lot of things.
hummmmmm I guess that's it then. Sorry for the long post
oh and btw, it's reply to sexpot but wasn't directed to her, the post is directed to all. lol that always cnfuseds me too. I mean usally a reply is made to a person u repling too so u click on that one but if a genral reply who do you reply too? lol Is it the last poster or the person that made the post? ... So i wasn't sure so i i picked the post creater lol

OLE MISS(not Old), my alma mater (twice) hasn't gotten rid of any mascot. It's still Colonel Reb. The uproar from the alumni and students put a halt to their plans to get rid of him. He didn't show up at the football games, but I think he'll be back.
