A doctor's note? I could see parental permission as a possibility but not a doctor's. As teens, we think that we are invincible and that no disease will ever conquer us. Sadly, I do tan myself. Only for prom though

Except for those of us that have a disease  But before then I thought I was invincible. 
What kind of harm can a tanning bed do to the skin which would need something like a doctor's note?

You look healthy when you have some color to your skin. I think that girls feel more attractive when they are tan vs. a sickly pale white. It's just a huge fad right now...especially in my school with prom comming up. Personally, I'm tanning because I'm like 90% of the other girls out there. I'm shallow, insecure, and want to look pretty in my prom dress and swimsuit, lol jk. Although there is some truth to that statement.

Those of us white folks who CAN tan do it because we look sickly , as said already, without any color to our skin. We tend to have darker body hair, and black hair against a paper white body looks bad to me.
As for California, I mean, how many rainy days do you have anyhow? Just go outside and tan. I don't live there so if I'm wrong correct me.

oh yeah. that's true. I heard on the news that if you're outside with no sunblock at all you can get burned in 20 minutes. Poor Ozone.

Tanning is just a fad. Pale did not used to mean "sickly"
Pale and White used to be things associated with beauty - in the early 1900s and earlier. Women who were pale and white were rich enough that they could afford to stay inside all day while their hired help did all the work. Being tanned meant that you had to do manual labor, etc.
Then later being tanned became a status symbol in that it showed you had money to go to various vacations down south and on cruises, etc.
Tanning is something semi-recent.

People who already have color can naturally lay out and expose each side longer than those of us who are still pale.
As for us, 15-20 minutes on each side is enough to statr with, and maybe an hour or two of total sun , then slowly build up.
Sunblock 10 is plenty for someone who's already really dark. For paler ones, move on up to 30 or 45. Reapply after getting in water or sweating.
Black people CAN tan, definitely, they just get darker and they do have tan lines.
As for being the only one on the beach, girl , your body is tight enough to not worry a second about it.

No one said that white used to mean sickly. Today, if you look at two people, one being white and one being tan, the darker of the two looks more healthy. They claim that's why kennedy won the presidential election because he had just gotten back from vacation for the first televised presidential debate.
