It was bowel cancer that killed my father, and his father before him. I guess that if it is hereditary, then maybe I am destined to get it. I often worry about these things, but still smoke, and drink. Maybe I should give them up, I know. But they are my only solice in life these days.

You're not destined to get it, but you probably have a higher chance of getting it than the average person. Giving up drinking won't help, though giving up smoking will. What matters most with bowel cancer, though, is diet. If you eat a diet with plenty of fibre you'll reduce your chances of getting it.
