So my roommate likes to smoke weed. Alot. He constantly goes out with his friends and gets high, but that's not what this post is about. I found out that he's been smoking in our dorm room, a few times actually. This raises several red flags for me, and I'd really rather him not smoke in our room. He mentioned one night that he'd acquired some weed from home, blah, blah, blah, and he wanted to smoke it. I told him I didn't want him to smoke in the room, it seems a bad idea, could get on my clothes, etc. etc. But he shrugged it off like nothing, and proceeded to smoke one in front of me. Anyway, what I was looking for was a better way to tell him to stop smoking in our room, because just asking him not to do it of course, isn't working too well. I am concerned about what could happen to me if he gets busted, because, along with smoking in the room, he keeps some of his weed in the room in a box with his stuff.
And I'm sorry if some of this doesn't make much sense; I'm very tired. :P

Tell him to stop, no ifs or buts about it.
Explain your reasons, that you don't like the smell and don't want people to think you smoke pot. If he still continues tell him you'll inform your dorm co-ordinator, or whom ever runs the place. If that doesn't work, threaten to tell his parents or the police.
At some point you've got to stand up for yourself.

actually I dont think thats advisable. its his room and his roommate he (or is it a she? I dont recall actually if a man or woman wrote the OP) could well get into shit for it as well. Now lets say you were leaving for a weekend like over thanksgiving...your roomie was staying.... that would be a good time to make that call, just as you leave town so its investigated while your away and what not. its still a risk, but lesser so than to do it today.

I just wonder if the OP can deal with it until Thanksgiving.

thanksgiving is ;ess than 3 weeks away. If not then they are gonna have to stand up, grow some balls and do something about it. I like the green myself, and smoke here nad there. but I never smoke it in the house. its fucking in the low 40s at night here now and still I walk outside to burn one. I dont allow the shit in my house and there are several problems that can arise from that like smelling like it even if yuo dont use it, yor room mate getting busted and dragging you down because of it.

I just hope the romomate doesn't call it on the one who's not doing it.
And forty degrees, really? In NYC it's only forty degrees in the morning. By the afternoon it's like 60-70.

As a former resident assistant (known as the evil RA) who had a student who was in the EXACT same situation you were in, I can give you some advice.
What my student did was come to me and we had a discussion. He told me that his room mate had been smoking in his room and left some "evidence" around. We both called the university police to "investigate."
Anyway, they found a seed (yes, a seed) that was on the other student's desk and they charged him with misdemeanor possession of marijuana. The other student did not get into trouble because he didn't have any drugs on "his side of the room." As long as they don't find the drugs in a "communal" area (areas used by both room mates, then you should be okay.
What you need to do is contact a superior in your dorm so you can get this taken care of asap. Your room mate may hate you, but you have to look out for yourself. Talk to your RA and tell him of the situation. If he or she doesn't handle it, then call the university police and tell them about the situation. The police can't do a search of the student's belongings without consent, BUT if he leave some evidence where the police can see it, they can charge him.

personally I would say be very careful b4 you tell the authorities. any drug arrest could put the kids financial aid at risk. maybe your school is different but in the dorm I lived in it would be very uncool to turn your roommate in for smoking weed. and no youd be leaving it up to the cops to decide who to arrest it they find something in your room which is a risk I wouldnt take.

I agree. I think turning your roommate in should be a last resort only.

First: Thanks for all the replies.
Second: I'm a dude.
Third: I agree with the above two posters. He's an asshole, but it hasn't gotten to the point where I'd do that to him. You guys are right though, I just need to be more confident and stand up to him. I'll try and make an excuse to bring the subject up with him soon to get it through his head, especially if he could possibly bring me down with him...It's a shame that's how our justice system works nowadays(since weed is supposed to stay in your system for 30 days, or so I'm told), but whatever, nothing I can really do about it.

Before you go turning him in, can you put in to get transfered to another room or get another room mate or something. I don't know how all the dorm shit works, I always had an apartment, even when I was required to live in the dorm. But, surely there's some means for changing rooms where two people have irreconcilable differences. You and he can just list differences that don't mention the green.

Well...
Talked to him yesterday, told him I'd really appreciate it if he didn't smoke in the room, and without hesitating he said "oh yeah, sure no problem, I won't smoke in here anymore". He didn't sound too sincere, I have a feeling I'll be catching him doing it again pretty soon.

Well, he got busted. Smoked again after I asked him not to, and while he was smoking one of his dumbass friends decides to throw a shoe out the window at someone. And that someone happened to be an official working for Housing and Dining, who came up to the dorm and caught him, and fined him 175$. Ouch. Irony's a bitch, ain't it?

Fuck it. I'm switching rooms. He talked to one of his friends on the phone about starting some "business", and I think he meant dealing. Don't know, don't care, because I can't stand being around him, and I definitely can't study when he's in the room, and the study room in my dorm hall has just doesn't work for me. I'm going to get my own room next semester.

Do one of the following:
A. ) Tell him that he is not going to smoke in the room. If he wants to smoke that badly tell him to move into a new room. Chances are he'll blow that off by the way you've described him, so then tell him if he smokes again you'll get the RA's. Just be a dick and get in his face about it. He'll probably stand down since its about drugs and wouldn't want the cops/RA's to get into it.
B. ) Switch rooms - probably a better idea since you don't seem to get along with him anyway. Then when you get into the new room call the cops on him
My room mate smokes a good amount in my room, but it doesn't bother me since I like to smoke every now and then. I know how your situation is, because there are times when I don't want him smoking. He's a really good friend though, so if I ask him not to smoke he listens and will go elsewhere.

Gee, I wonder if he'll figure out who called the cops on him.
There's no point in bothering him once he's out of the room.

I moved out and into my new room, finally. I was right buy the way, he was dealing pot. By the time I got the keys to my new room he had so much weed stashed in there the stink reached out into the hallway. He even put tape all across the door frame to keep the smell in the room. Over break my mom ended up talking to his, and according to her he lied to me about getting busted...well, more like he didn't tell the entire truth. He got arrested, and when he went to court he was not only fined, he was also supposed to get drug tests every week to ensure he stayed clean. Well, not only did he not pay the money(since his parents refused to leave him with any cash, good for them) he didn't get tested(and sure as hell didn't stay clean). So his parents got a letter about that a week before classes started, saying he wasn't allowed to sign up for classes and explaining the whole ordeal...I guess they had no idea. I did see him once after classes started so I'm guessing they *somehow* managed to sort it out....and I feel like kinda an ass for saying this, but it's good to see he didn't do all the shit he's done and get away with it. Well that's the last update, just thought it was worth mentioning in case anybody was wondering.
