I just recently read up on a guy here at work who was at his doctor's office because he has pubic hair that's coated with a coarse, brown sustance and makes the affected hairs more fragile to breakage. I've heard some stories but never this one. Has anyone ever seen/heard of/experienced this in their pubic area?

I've experienced something similar with underarm hair (but mine was white). There are two different things this can be. One is a superficial fungal encrustation called 'piedra', but this is usually black or white. More likely it's the other, which is a bacterial encrustation, whose name I can't remember. It is easily treated with anything that will kill bacteria - I used an anti-dandruff shampoo containing pyrithione zinc (a general biocide), but you could also use various antiseptics.

Do you mean that "piedra" has a black or white coating instead of brown? And in your case your underam hairs were coated with white ON TOP OF your normal hair color? Did it make the hairs coarse and brittle?

Yes, black and white piedra are due to different fungus species, and I haven't heard of any other colours. So brown suggests the bacterial coating to me.

In my case it was a white coating over the hair, making the hair look thicker and awful. It could have been white piedra, but from looking at pictures (which I can't find) it seemed more likely to be the bacterial one.

Thank you. I only found limited pictures on white piedra also. If you click the link, it's the third picture down.

@Ineligible
I know is an old post, but i couldnt find the relevant discussion on the topc anywhere else. Even I have the same problem as decribed by you(white material on hair shaft under the armpits).Mine are white in colour rather than yellow or brown in colour which should have been, if it is a bacterial infection. Since mine is white in colour, i have a doubt whether mine is white piedra. You said yours was white too, so did the usage of anti dandruff shampoo cure it for you??

Yes, it was very effective. I can't remember how many treatments it needed, but it wasn't many. Zinc pyridinethione kills both bacteria and fungi, so it seems it might be useful on both piedra and the bacterial coating.
