All energy drinks contain high concentrations of sugar to boost you while working out , however if you are doing light to moderate excercise to lose weight and gain muscle , water is by far the best of all. It contains no sugar so that the energy you are now burning is the natural fats in your body.
The only time i can recomend drinking energy drinks is if you are competing in all day sports competitions where you are burning high amounts of energy and need to replace it rapidly between matches.
Banana's are a great source of Energy and Potassium , so a way to get the energy you need for your work out is eat a banana 1 hour or so before you work out and then during your work out refresh yourself with water.

A banana? Bananas have hardly any energy in them, and most of it is sugar energy.
If you want to lose weight eat a banana as a snack, but don't eat a banana and expect it to fuel you through a vigorous workout.

You are correct the amount of energy he requires depends on the extent of the excercise and also varies from person to person , however for me....I normally eat 1 or 2 banana's before i run it seems to be just enough to fuel me through a moderate work out , for a hard work out i will eat something 2 hours before i run.
although i tried running this morning and felt like giving up at 15 miles which was 10 miles out and 5 back , i managed to go about 2.5 more miles before i needed to take a cab home !

Yes, and some light carb filled snack before the workout. Nothing drastic, just enough to give you a boost.
