I was recently diagnosed with Bronchitis (don't know if it's chronic or acute) this past wednesday morning. What I would like to know is, how long does it take to recover? I heard it is highly contagious, and I'm afraid that I will pass it onto my loved ones especially my little niece. \:\(

If you're talking about something you didn't have before, have now, and expect to recover from, it's acute. Chronic bronchitis is ongoing.

The term "bronchitis" just refers to what is being attacked (the bronchi) - they can be infected by a variety of viruses or bacteria (or even attacked by toxic gases). Essentially, it's usually a respiratory infection that has gone deeper. Depending on what the pathogen is, recovery may take days or weeks - more often several weeks.

How contagious it is depends on the pathogen.

I believe the contagious period is before you start actually displaying symptoms. When I had bronchitis I was actually on my first real vacation ever, first time being in the U.S. :-O - it sucked, but I was recovered in only a few days thanks to some nice medicine. Did they prescribe you anything?

Yeah, motrin for chest pains and Robutussin for the coughs. Also this isn't chronic since this is the first time this has happend to me. I was also prescribed an inhaler in case I have trouble breathing.

Well that's strange. They gave me prescription medication at the hospital for my bronchitis, but I don't remember what it was called. The ones you mentioned are available over the counter. I think I had really dangerous levels of congestion or something. I hope you get better soon!

Oh p.s., when I had it I didn't give it to my then boyfriend even though we were *ahem* in the same bed, so it can't be that contagious.

If it's bacterial an antibiotic may be prescribed, but antibiotics are useless if it's viral.

There are several different bacteria and viruses that can cause bronchitis, and the severity and contagiousness varies.
