My dad had kidney cancer last year. He got the kidney removed. Doctors generally don't like to do chemo or radiation because its not very effective in the long run since kidney cancer has a high recurrence rate. There are a number of experimental drugs being studied right now. He's currently in a year long program to test 3-4 of these drugs. In the past they have been pretty successful, though the side effects are pretty awful (cranial bleeding etc.) he's been lucky though and has only experience some high blod pressure and nausea.
