how many times on average does it take to stop hurting and start feeling better
my girlfriend was practically crying, i used lubed, i fingered her for awhile to try in loosen her up, i made sure i went very slow when penetrating too, but she was still in so much pain
i don't like seeing her hurt

Well i think it depends on alot of things. The size of your penis, how tight she is, is she nervous, well lubed etc?
If she was nervous it could have caused her t tighten up which is probably part of the reason. If she hasnt been fingered much or really had much in there that could be another reason she is so tight. Also if you have a large penis that plays a factor obviously.
All you can do is make her more comfortable and take it gentle and slow, with lots of lube and communication.

Perhaps she's just too nervous? Sex is half mental, and if she has any doubt or fear, her body is going to project that. I guess you just need to continue with the lube and slow penetration until she can get use to it. She needs to be as relaxed as possible.
However, if it really is too much for her, then maybe a trip to the doctor would be in order. It could be something else that is making sex difficult for her. But that's just a guess.
