Well, I finally did it! I went in on Friday and donated a "double red".
Now that I HAVE done it. I don't know why I waited so long, there was nothing to it. I was there while 3 other people came in to donate whole blood,(came and left) so that seems even easier.
The only problem I had was that I started my period right after, and because of the thinner that they use in the separator machine, it was a bit messier than usual for about 24hrs...
I'm O- so everyone can use me...lol
Hmm...something about that just feels good! (I just hope I don't get a call that I have some icky disease! IKES)

Congratulations!
It's a worthwhile cause.
Being a male who has had sex with another male, they won't take mine, but I encourage anybody who can to donate!

Your blood is a slut! lol just kidding. Isn't it such a great feeling knowing someone who was just in a car accident or is almost dying needs your blood and that's what saved them?

hehe, on the slut note...
I just did some reading though, and it is funny how, my old lifestyle SHOULD really disqualify me, but a guy who has had sex ONCE with another guy since 1977 is banned for life. However, they never questioned how many partners I have ever had, just how many in the last year, whether or not I have ever been paid for sex, and if I was with a man who had ever had sex with another man. No questions about my last HIV test only if I have ever had Hepititis C...
Also, it is all self reporting, so how many guys ACTUALLY do donate when they have had a homosexual encounter?

Many, I'm sure ..... but should they?
Actually, with all the tests available today, I think it's an unnecessary precaution, but as long as it's in place, I'll abide by it.

That is where I am coming from. This article pretty much sums it up for me.
I think someone is just afraid of catching gay!!!

I did it once, towards the end of it I felt really sick and dizzy, and may have blacked out for a moment. At least I know I saw spots. I recovered pretty quickly, but the nurses kept me around for like another 3 hours just to be sure I was okay to drive home.
Sorta put me off doing it again, especially if they're going to make me lie on an uncomfortable chair thing for another 3 hours.

You were not anemic or dehydrated?
I felt fine. Mostly bored but otherwise ok. If I had been dehydrated I think it would have really kicked my ass.

I think the whole sex with another man this I stupid also, surely they could just test the blood for anything harmful (or get you checked beforehand). Obviously they don't need blood *that* badly.
I've donated a few times - no sweat. Unfortunately there are people who do have problems or have had problems giving blood but do so anyway! I have to applaud those sturdy warriors.

Still, I do not advocate going against established guidelines.
If they say no for me, I don't go.

Neither, that's the strange thing.
I might go back sometime, see if it happens again.

I used to campain at school to make people donate blood.
I mean, as long as your can and meet the requirements, it's takes very little out of your day to do a whole lot of good for other people.
One blood donation by you could save up to 3 lives. That's maybe an hour max of your time and you could have helped saved 3 people.
So good for you, having O- blood makes you a very wanted woman and it's a blood type that blood banks usually need the most.
That's my two cents.
And also, I don't really agree with the if your gay we don't want your blood policy. Don't they test blood anyway? Just becuase you're gay dosn't mean you have HIV just like just because I'm not dosn't mean I don't.

I would try it again, you can donate parts of your blood too, you don't have to give whole blood. I think though, that a pint of whole blood would be easier on the bod than giving the double donation of red blood cells I gave...IDK. OBVIOUSLY I am no expert.

Yea for O-! Glad to hear you did it, you're braver than most. I donate as often as they'll take me, like to the day lol. I used up 3 pints when a surgeon nicked an artery, so I'm replacing it... donated a whole gallon as of last Thursday though... and they said I was good in math...
