I was wondering if anyone had any experience of having a lump under the skin on the back of their neck. its very hard to describe its exact location but it'd be near where my neck meets my back on the right side. it wouldn't be too far away from my shoulder bone either.

Although it maybe unrelated, i have had in the past a swollen parotid gland (under my left ear) which i had removed a couple of yrs ago. So i thought there might be a connection somehow

Thanks in advance

A lump like that sounds like a sebaceous cyst. If so, it's not related to the parotid gland.

A sebaceous cyst can occur when the exit of a sebaceous gland (a skin gland producing sebum, the natural skin moisturiser) is blocked by dead skin cells. This is especially likely to occur in an area where the skin gets regularly rubbed by clothing, such as the neck. Usually if that happens the gland dies quickly, but sometimes it keeps producing sebum and swells up into a lump that feels deeper than an ordinary pimple, almost but not quite painless.

If you leave it alone a sebaceous cyst will usually go away in two months. Don't try to lance it as this will make it last longer, as well as possibly infecting it.
