You have to upload your avatar to some picture sharing website and then link it to that website.

http://imageshack.us is a particularly easy one to use that doesn't require you to register.
For the sake of people on slow dial-ups, don't use pictures that are large-files. Your picture will be reduced to 90×90 pixels anyway. If you use a picture-editing program (a simple one like the free Irfanview will do) you can create a 90×90 pixel picture that looks exactly the way you want it, and will be very few kilobytes.
