I remember seeing a movie preview (a basketball movie of some sort, the name escapes me) where the coach implies muscle gain also is a height gain... is this true?

No, it wouldn't be. Height depends on the length of your bones, and once the growth plates fuse in late adolescence that doesn't change and can't be changed except by surgery.
