So situational!
Depends really on your situation with the other person, but try and think of things that you have in common, have you been to the same events the other person has been to? Work, school, other activities..
Personal stories are always good, although I wouldn't suggest them if you are meeting the person for the first time. If it's addressing another person in public who you have never met, the best way is to make fun of something around you. Or make a statement that will make them ask a question. For example you could be in line for something behind someone and say to them, "I'd say about two hours" and when they say, "What?" you say, "that's how long we are going to be here for."

are you asking about breaking the ice or are you asking about the art of conversation with someone you already know?

well, I have a very large and diverse group of friends and I like to surround myself with intelligent people. For those two reasons, I find myself in all kinds of esoteric discussions and debates. I've never shied away from the 3 classic taboos of politics, religion and sex.
If you're looking for something a bit lighter, books and movies generally make a good conversation piece.
Remember this wisdom though; Great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, small minds discuss people.

If you're in class just turn to the girl/guy next to you and say something like "i have no idea about this material, do you?" even if you know if perfectly.

What are some good topics to start a conversation, I sorta... forgot some.
I ran into this problem the other day at a party around 5 differen girls (yes im a dork, and a car guy). I found myself opening my mouth a few times to try to say something but then had nothing to say...
