I'll be away for about three weeks from tomorrow while lugging a pack around in tropical heat, missing trains and buses, sleeping on streets, getting rare diseases, etc. See you all later!

No, no missionary aspect. Visiting plenty of temples, though.
It seemed like a good idea at the time, thor, when the promotional super-cheap special air fare was announced. Now I am not so sure, but I'm sure it will have been an experience when I come back.

I hope it's what you want(ed) to do. Some people like that kind of thing. I do...all except for the humidity. Humidity and I are not friends.

I'm back. 
And the answer for you, Mr U, was "southern India". Quite remarkable, but a big culture shock. It makes south-east Asia look European. But the people were extraordinarily friendly. So many wanted to shake your hand, and have their pictures taken with you - it was like being a celebrity.
We went via Malaysia, and thor might be interested that a big issue in Malaysia at the moment is Christian use of the word 'Allah' for God. The militant Islamists are trying to stop Christians and Jews from using the word; the churches are resisting. The Malaysian highest court has sided with the churches; the Islamists are now appealing to the state systems.

that's not all that new. Like most Canadians, I became intimately aware of the level of strife after the Air India bombing in '85.
I've often pondered the possibility that India could go down in history as the site of the first nuclear civil war.
