OK, I'm ending this college year soon and it looks like I'll be repeating the year. The good thing is that it'll give me another year in college, making me eligible to run for Student Union. I'm thinking of going for Communications Officer, and I've appled to be a candidate, but I'm uncertain.

Should I just get a real, money paying job?

I would think most perspective employers would look with more favor on experience in collegiate government than on some common work experience that most candidates will have.

I think you should do it.

I would have thought it would depend on how relevant the position, or the alternative job, were to what you eventually want to do. If you want to be a politician, of course you should get into student politics. If your chosen career is something technical, you would be best getting work experience in that technical area, if possible.

Communications Officer could also look good when pursuing a career in marketing.

Either way though, as one's professional career progresses, part time jobs and extra curricular activities mean less and less and often just drop of the bottom of a resume within a few years.

To me, the relevance of the activity to the job being sought is less important than what it would say about the initiative of the individual. And so, it's more about the willingness of your prospective employee to take on a challenge and a position of leadership than it is about the applicability of the experience.

I completely agree with Mr. U that such an experience won't matter in the long run, as far as employment advantages. And while I may even be suspect of someone who's had a few jobs keeping it on their resume after being out of college for say six or seven years. I think it could be a benefit for landing your first gig and the first gig is what makes the other gigs possible.
