Utah: Making miscarriages a crime?
Utah lawmakers have passed a bill that would make intentional or 'reckless' miscarriages punishable by life in prison.

Well to make something criminal requires there to be a punishment. What punishment do you give to a woman for having a miscarriage? A fine? Imprisonment?

Thats just ridiculous. Life imprisonment for not wanting a little tumour grow inside you that will completely change your life. Or for even accidentally destroying it.

Good question. It's kind of uncharted territory, no?
I see it like charging someone for trying to commit suicide. What possible benefit does it have? If someone is so unhappy with their life that they try to end it, it seems like the worst possible thing you could do is to put them away into prison for a part of it.
Not to mention the logistics of even trying to enforce this. When almost 40% of pregnancies result in a miscarriage, how do they even think that they'll be able to investigate them all?

Except it's not a tumor. I think we both know that.

if you think miscarriage could ever be a crime, then cut you fucking dick off Okay...true. But the problem is with the wording. They aren't actually concerned with miscarriages, which are always accidental. They're concerned with intentionally killing a fetus.
if anyone thinks that an anti-miscarriage law is even remotely like an anti-abortion law, that person is a FUCKING MORON Or maybe not. If you understand that they are talking about intentionally killing a fetus as opposed to an accidental death of a baby in the womb, they are very much similar. Who's the moron here?
no question no argument MORON Yeah, I've always found this the best way to endear others to my viewpoint and to encourage rational discussion of a controversial issue. Good luck with that.

ok, the real Mr U is back now. Sorry, was at the boiling point yesterday before even logging in. Strangely, due to my interactions with civil servants during the day.
Has anyone heard of Christine Taylor? She was recently charged with attempted infanticide after falling down the stairs. What other restrictions would you like to put on pregnant women? House arrest maybe? Is giving birth to a child with fetal alcohol syndrome and indictable crime?

Christine Taylor was accused of attempted infanticide because police and medical workers originally believed there was reason to believe she intentionally tried to kill the fetus, partially based on earlier statements that she had made.
Actually, she was never charged with anything.

I think it's a way of shoring up a loophole in anti-abortion law...assuming one exists. But, as with all such laws where intent must be proven, it's subject to abuse...on both sides of the issue. Personally, I think they should just do a better job of enforcing the laws already on the books. After all, an intentional miscarriage is really just an abortion by its intent.
