OK, Olympics are over, now to make you think about what you're cheering about.

To me, national pride makes no sense. Pride is something that you feel for a personal achievement, or a group achievement that you've been involved in. How can you be proud to be an American, or a Canadian, or English or Irish or whatever? What has being a certain nationality achieved for you? Your national or local sports time win a championship. Yay! Feelings of excitement as you would probably support them, although I still don't see why you would. How is there any pride involved?

I honestly have no idea what my national teams get up to, it doesn't interest me.

I share the same sentiment. I never did understand wild eyed patriots or national pride in general. I just never got what people are so jazzed about be it a sports team or a country.

I think it's natural and human to feel fellow-feeling with people closest to us, with whom we share familiar cultural experiences. Where it goes wrong is when this fellow-feeling and familiarity is taken as an indication that our country, or its inhabitants, are superior to others, or ought to get more consideration than others.

I don't have a problem with people getting excited and twitterpated when "their team" wins (even if their team is a national team), but I do get put out when these folks act like they had something to do with the victory.

Like my brother and Univ. of Kentucky basketball. He lives and dies by it and says things like "we won" or "we beat you guys".
'We'? Really? When did you start playing for UofK. In fact, you never attended any college or university, let alone UK.

Yeah...I kind of get that. But I'm all about supporting your national teams in the olympics. Much has been made recently over the evils of national pride. No one has convinced me yet that it's a bad or destructive thing.

as reserved as Canadians tend to be, it was kind of nice to see our fans making a fuss for a change. It's good to be happy.
Besides, as Catherine O'Hara pointed out, we are sorry \:\)

I was happy to see Canada win, as I was happy to see all the others when they won.

Excellence knows no national boundary.

Inept people attempting to 'play' sports is not nearly as enjoyable as watching those good at it.

Anyone else notice how the Russian government asked for the resignation (in lieu of being fired) of their Olympic committee members because Russia didn't win enough medals? I think that's an example of National pride going too far.

Indeed. Or even more likely, sent off to a gulag in Siberia to never be heard from or about again.

I would say I agree with this and take it a step further.

Sports in general bother me. I am not interested in watching other people play sports. I hate that sport players are so highly praised and even worse highly paid. Sure you can call me a "hater" infact most people do.

I say this being from louisiana where the saints just won the superbowl... to say it makes me sick is probably an understatement. I didn't care about the saints before they won, I don't care now however, my entire state is still buzzing with thrill.

I hate the whole situation. I *hate* people who *love* these super stars.

Don't get me wrong, its nice hell finally froze over.. its gotten cold in louisiana at long last. However, these football players don't care about their fans. These football players don't know the name of every fan. These football players don't care if their fans houses are sold.

These sports players are just that. Sports players. I am not saying they don't work for their ability or should be hated because of their athletic ability. However, if they are really playing for the "love" of the game, lets see them play for the "love" of the game only making 30,000$ a year (isn't that about the national average income?)

I'm tired of hearing about how people "love" a team or "admire" an athlete when that person is not even a personal friend.

My computer is capable of loving me more than any athlete.
