I live in Texas.

when I look into the night sky, to the East is a very bright object in the sky. I'm gonna guess it's a planet, Ive been seeing it all summer but I not sure which one it is? Mars? Jupiter? Can someone tell me?

Do you see it too?

If you start reconstructing a mountain out of mashed potatoes, I'm coming down there to see the action!

As far as I can tell, its Jupiter. I didn't check to see how long its been there, but last night it rose in the East, a few hours after the moon rose. Also, just very slightly to the upper right of Jupiter is Uranus, and until a few weeks ago, Mercury was hot on its tail.

I believe it's too bright to be Jupiter.. Usually the bright evening star is Venus.

Correction.. you're right it is Jupiter.... I don't think I've seen Jupiter this bright in a long time.

This Week's Planet Roundup

Mercury is hidden in the glare of the Sun.

Venus, though bright at magnitude –4.4, is getting low in the west-southwest during twilight. It sets by dark.

Mars, vastly dimmer at magnitude +1.5, is a little to Venus's upper right. Look also for similar Spica farther to Venus's upper left for most of the week. Saturn has moved far off to Venus's right or lower right. Bring binoculars for all three of these faint objects.

Jupiter (magnitude –2.8, in Pisces) rises in late twilight and is well up in the east-southeast before midnight. It's highest in the south around 2 or 3 a.m. daylight saving time — the brightest starlike point in the morning sky.

I think you guys are correct. Thanks to all you "knowledge whores" who helped in finding out what planet it was for me. It's amazing to look at thru my high power binoculars. If you get a chance, look at in one night.

Hey Pete, can you see it down under?
