I know you guys arent doctors but i thought i would ask since some of you have kids and are around kids often..

My daughter has had a fever going on 9 days now. I have taken her to the doctor 3 times, she is on antibiotics.she started running a fever on wednesday , and had a sore throat ect.. Her fever got to about 103.5 and broke out in hives all over. Her throat swelled more her glands in her neck got huge, she had other symptoms aswell, headache, yucky nose, coughing,,But mainlt it is her throat. Took her to a clinic on saturday, he said more than likley its a virus, and probablt not strep since she has teh other symptoms.but he gave her antibiotics anywasy just in case.. He said if it gets worse or has a hard time brething to bring her back and we would give her a steriod shot to reduce the swelling. So she did get worse and she got the shot, It helped that night and thats all,the swelling came back and she still had this high fever and Motrin would hardly bring it down.So i called the another doctor and talked to the nurse and she said its not common to run a fever that long with a throat infection, espeially since she was on antibiotics for 4 days, So i took her back, and he said it seems to be a virus, but he changed her antibiotic to a stronger one , just in case, i asked him about her immune system, if maybe it was weak or something, becasue everytime she gets sick , she stays sick forever and just cant seem to fight it off. He said once she is over this, that we will do blood work to check to see whats going on with it... Sooo after all of that long mess,, Is it common to run a fever that long? Have any of your kids or any kids you been around run fevers that long? Im really worried that she has something wrong, I mean in October she has the Croup, which normally kids get over that quick and she didnt, she ran the fever many many days and stayed sick, same with the flu, Everyone else in the family gets over it quickly and has minor symtoms compared to hers.

Anyways sorry to ramble on and on, i know you guys arent doctors, but i was just wondering if you knew of anyone that ran fevers so damn long. I know im sounding like a paranoid mother, but seeing her so ill , and staying so sick all of the time worries me.

Sometimes kids can run fevers for a long time. I work in a day care center, and this year especially we've had kids out for a week or longer because of a fever. Did any of the doctors test her for strep?

No they ddint take a swab for strep. Both of the doctors said they didnt think it was strep because of the other symptoms she was having. But he did give her antibiotic just in case. I dont know really why they didnt just go ahead and test hert though.
It makes me feel a little better knowing that she isnt the only kids that runs fevers a long time, i know its been a bad year. I sware ever since she started school it has been non stop with something.

They should've tested for strep. She might have been allergic to one of the antibiotics. That can cause fevers and hives, especially Penicillin.

Sometimes taking too many antibiotics over a period of time can cause a deficiency in the immune system. Have they (she) been on them longer than a week and a half?

She started on the antibiotic on saturday, it was keflex.
Then on wednesday i took her back and they put her on a heavy duty amoxicillin, with potassium or something, its like 600 mg or something where the keflex was 250.

She got the hives before she started the antibiotic though.

She still has a fever today. it was like 101.2 last time i checked!!!
I feel so sorry for her.

I'm sorry to hear that. I would schedule a follow up to see if it's not anything more serious, or at least to see why the antibiotics aren't working. (maybe it hasn't been long enough for them to kick in)

OK well today she still has a fever. Its only a bit over 100. But last night she broke out in a bright red rash all over her stomach and neck and her back and arms. Freaked me out, i was thinking maybe she was having a reaction to the Augmentin/antibiotic. So i called doctor and he said that it doesnt sound like a reaction to the med,but more like a strep type of rash!! .So now we believe that all along she has strep, and the whole time both doctors were telling me ,99% chance its just a virus. Stupid doctors. She woudlnt have had to be sick for so long if the right antibiotic was given the first time to take care of it. Anyways hopefully she is on the mend. I HOPE!!

One more question , does any one know if strep affects babies the same as older kids?I have a 13 month old who has been exposed to this, and i thought i heard some where that strep isnt as bad in babies, for some reason, maybe its wishfull thinking.

Thanks guys
