PENILE
AUGMENTATION SURGERY
What
is Penile Augmentation Surgery (PAS)?
PAS is divided into lengthening and girth enhancement.
To lengthen the appearance of the penis, one of three suspensory
ligaments is severed, lowering where the penis hangs from
the pelvis. This almost always displaces the pubic
hair to appear on the top portion of the penile shaft.
It looks strange initally and requires electrolysis to correct.
If
the ligament reattaches, which is what it naturally tries
to do, the penis will likely be smaller than it originally
was.
To
prevent this, PAS patients must attach weights to their
penis for 4 to 8 hours a day. For more information on surgical
techniques, check out Urology
International.
Girth
enhancement is usually performed by injecting fat from another
body area into the penis. Often, this fat is absorbed
within a few months, requiring reinjection again.
Some men acquire lumpy deposits, which look and feel strange.
Another girth enhancement method is a dermal graft.
Eye-shaped slices of skin are removed from where the buttocks
meet the thighs and then sewn into the penis.
Does
Penis size affect self-esteem?
Although there is no real answer that is true for everyone,
a psycho-sexual study in 1996 of 66 men who underwent PAS
suggests that the answer is no. Although 44% stated
they were having the operation to improve self-esteem, one
year later there was no significant change in their feelings
of self-esteem. The respondents also reported less
sex with partners, less frequent masturbation, more genital
pain during sex, and significant regret at ever having had
the operation. 85% never sought sex therapy or psychotherapy
prior to the surgery, and most never talked to anyone other
than the operating doctor about their surgery.
