hi,
i'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced what feels like extreme moodiness or depression on the pill? i've only been on them for a month - for the first three days i was a bit jittery (like almost crazy) and very weepy, then i was fine during the following 3 weeks and now, at the end of my first cycle, i am feeling very low and weepy again - more depressed than crazy. i'm not usually given to extreme moods like this - so while part of it is due to some other stresses in my life, part of it feels pretty crazy... has this happened to anyone else?
thanks.

a question for clarification...how old are you?

Me personally I hated the pill. Got on it last June and got off it in August. At that time, I would have normal periods and no severe mood swings. Starting in Nov, I began having severe mood swings where a few days Id be COMPLETELY depressed, then happy and ohkay for the rest of the month. I wasnt taking it then. Now Ive been on depo provera for a month but I dont experience the mood swings any longer.

Part could be your age...I just turned 19 3 weeks ago, so I know my body is still adjusting its natural hormone levels and such.

Also, stress might be effecting you advirsly. Even if you are only stressed out a little bit, this coupled with the new hormone levels your body is experiencing could be drastically effecting your mood.

Another factor could definitely be the pills.

There are many different kinds, with different levels of progesterine and estrogene in them. Depending on the type of pill you are taking and the level of estrogen and progesterine it contains, it could be the reason for your mood change.

Remember, with the changing monthly cycle of most widely used birth control pills, there are generally 3 periods of low hormone level pills, then high hormone level pills, then placebo. (if it is a 3 cycle pill such as ortho-tricyclin) This is marked by the different color pills for different days. (like light green to dark green to white or whatever) This may explain any weekly changes you may see.

Also, adjusting to them takes several months. This is new and drastic for your body. It needs to get used to them, then your body should balance itself back out.

So, Id say dont be too worried about it for now. Talk to friends during your times of depression, talk about your problems, keep a journal (that really helped me), etc. If it is a consistent problem and you want to stop BC, then look into Depo Provera (3 month shot) Its 99.7% effective and you dont have to remember to take your pill everyday-big plus!!! Ill keep checking the board...if you have anymore questions about depo or bc or need to talk, Ill be happy to answer anything i can for ya! Good luck!

thanks for the reply... i'm actually 33 (halfway to menopause!) and have until now always used condoms. i don't think i was on a cyclical pill - all one colour for 21 days and i should be starting the new pack on friday (after a one week break) but i don't think i'm up for swollen boobs (they're big enough as is) and more ugly mood swings. i can't see my doctor til next week which is why i posted the question... i was just wondering if anyone else had experienced severe craziness on the pill. (now i'm thinking diaphragm!)
