Rules of Friendship – Appreciation

Once in a while, people like to be acknowledged that they are doing a good job. It’s really that easy. Having a simple appreciation for someone in your life and letting them know that once in a while is a huge gesture that adds tremendous depth and value to a friendship. I always make a conscious effort to tell my friends how much I appreciate them and what they do for me. On the flip side, I have friends who really do appreciate what I do for them. You don’t have to take them out to a romantic dinner and throw a party with balloons. If someone helps you with some homework just say thanks. If someone picks up your dry cleaning, tell them thank you. When someone sends you a gift for your birthday, send them a note. Even if you are hanging out with your friends and you finish each other’s sentences, let them know that is exactly why you are friends.

For instance, at a football game when the home team scores a touchdown everyone turns and high fives and cheers. The high fiving and cheering is more than just a celebration of their team scoring, it lets the athletes on the field know that what they do is appreciated and we actually care. From the player’s point of view, it serves as a motivation to continue playing their hardest and from the fans point of view, it’ll keep the excitement there.

It doesn’t only apply to professional sports and you don’t have to be cheering your coworkers on as they complete a project. When your mom makes dinner, say thanks once in a while. Trust me, that’ll get you an EPIC Christmas present.

Also don’t expect to be appreciated in everything you do. Some things you do may not warrant praise. Something you do should be expected and should be done anyway. Something such as making sure the door to the garage closes when you walk into someone’s house to stop the heat from going outside is basic courtesy. Not everyone gets a trophy. Understand that and you’ll save yourself a lot of frustration and you’ll be motivated and work harder to gain that appreciation and as a result, you’ll be more successful and further along.

Show your favorite blogger some appreciation by sending this to your friends and family, leaving a comment and talking about it in the forums. How do you guys show friends they are appreciated? Do you guys ever feel like you are underappreciated?
